Out now: The Book on Flowers

Łukasz and Radek weave the seasonality of the world of plants into their personal story. They talk about types of flowers available in different seasons and explain how to take care of them. These are hyacinths, blooming branches, buttercups, anemones, dahlias, chrysanthemums, succulents and tillandsias. They also give step by step instructions on how to prepare flower compositions.

A narrow and charming Szamarzewskiego street in the district of Jeżyce, Poznań. Several years ago this street seemed almost forgotten, but today it became very lively with new, offbeat places popping up. And Łukasz and Radek, the owners of Kwiaty&MIUT florist established in 2013, can be well credited with contributing to the renaissance of the Jeżyce district. This is not a typical flower shop with gerberas and red roses. The bouquets crafted in Jeżyce more often contain poppies, buttercups, plump peonies, meadow flowers and plants we remember from our grandmas’ gardens. Despite the fancy trends from floristic fairs, the authors of Kwiaty&MIUT rely on light, natural and simple compositions creating their own – already recognisable – style.

Three years after opening their flower shop, the owners bring to the flower enthusiasts the album “O kwiatach” (“On Flowers”), which in a collage of memories, plant stories, practical advice and stories about their flower shop itself. And the fabulous photos are the album’s foremost value.

„The flower shop is not a common shop for us. We think about flowers in many dimensions. We cannot imagine a home interior without them, no occasion would be festive without flowers. When handed in a bouquet they need no words, when put in a vase they are like a garden which one hopes to have in the city. Actually, since we have been living in Poznań we have been missing the flowers picked behind the house. We still remember, from childhood, that they were brought home just like that, for decoration. They would always be put on the kitchen table. It was so natural for us that today we cannot imagine a day without flowers. We would like to pass on this beautiful habit, this little rite. We want to show that having flowers at home is a way to surround yourself with beauty every day. They do not need elaborate, complex embellishments because flowers are simply beautiful themselves.”

The book is divided according to seasons. It contains descriptions of authorial flower compositions and tips how to make these compositions at home, as well as where to get, buy or pick interesting plants. It is more of a collection of inspirations rather than a strict guide into composing bouquets. Each and every flower lover can take a look inside, even an amateur who is just about to start learning about flowers. Most of all, this is a book for people who admire natural beauty and pretty objects, because, as the authors stress themselves, Kwiaty&MIUT is a place where you will find applied art and apply art yourself.

Additionally, the book contains essays on flowers in painting and art, as well as on types of gardens and symbolism of flowers.
